The IOC's flawed policy on trans women in sport

You Can Play reacts to this new policy published by the IOC

We believe unequivocally that transgender athletes belong in sport

The recent decision by the International Olympic Committee to restrict participation in women’s Olympic competition is deeply disappointing. While this policy applies only to elite international competition, it is important to be clear about what it does not change.

This ruling does not apply to community, youth, or grassroots sport - where the vast majority of athletes participate.

Our collective responsibility remains the same: to ensure that every athlete feels safe, respected, and welcome in sport, regardless of sexuality or gender identity

Sport is strongest when it includes everyone. We will continue working with teams, leagues, and organizations to create environments where trans athletes can show up as their full selves and belong.

About You Can Play Newsroom

The You Can Play Project works to ensure the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches and fans. We achieve this by creating a community of allies that is able to foster a true sense of belonging. This becomes possible when sports teams sharpen the focus on the person’s skills, work ethic, and competitive spirit, not their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by developing a culture of respect, in every player, coach and fan.
