Billy Bean - A Legacy of Inclusion

You Can Play Celebrates Billy's life and amazing contribution to inclusive sport

Brian Kitts, You Can Play co-founder offered this reflection on the passing of Billy Bean, a legacy of inclusion within baseball and throughout the sports world.

"To be in a room when Billy talked about his life as a closeted, and then out athlete, was to see first-hand how the fear he once felt became a true joy as he changed the game of baseball and all of sports. We watched as he quietly changed the minds of athletes, front office staffs, fans and parents. He then offered assurance to young athletes that they could and would live their lives openly and had nothing to fear. The You Can Play team honors Billy’s commitment, humanity and compassion and we are grateful to have had his guidance, kindness and friendship."

About You Can Play Newsroom

The You Can Play Project works to ensure the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches and fans. We achieve this by creating a community of allies that is able to foster a true sense of belonging. This becomes possible when sports teams sharpen the focus on the person’s skills, work ethic, and competitive spirit, not their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by developing a culture of respect, in every player, coach and fan.
